Synopsis
The Locke family uncovers more magic within Keyhouse, while a new threat — the most dangerous one yet — looms in Matheson with plans of his own for the keys. From Carlton Cuse (Lost, Bates Motel) and Meredith Averill (The Haunting of Hill House), Locke & Key is a coming-of-age mystery about love, loss, and the unshakable bonds that define family. Locke and Key on Netflix is the television adaptation of the best-selling comic book series by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez for IDW Entertainment.

Review
From the beginning of the first season, I was afraid that if they didn’t follow the source material, it would come to nothing, and I know I wasn’t alone in that, because almost all fans of the comics had great hopes! And frankly, from the start, our fears became reality, the series didn’t follow the horror aspect of the comics, but did follow the fantasy and drama. But once I got used to it, it got better, because the good casting and storylines turned out to be quite strong.
With this third season and thus also the last, Locke & Key manages to improve for the second time after they bettered with season two. Where they started with the second season, they now know how to finish it in a beautiful way. And as sad as it is to say goodbye to the Locke family, I’m so glad they did it with dignity. Because not many shows get the chance to close nicely, but thanks to showrunners Carlton Cuse and Meredith Averill, and their decision to shoot seasons 2 and 3 back to back, the show has been given that opportunity propably.

A big positive of this season is Captain Frederick Gideon (Kevin Durand), whom we already got to know in the second season. His wickedness, which we glimpsed before, is fully manifested in the third season. He could have been a little more gruesome, but in the end he’s a great demon who only wants one thing, and goes straight for it along with his summoned cronies. When the Locke’s get in his way, we get to see a nice cat and mouse game again like with Eden and Gabe in the previous season.
A second positive thing, that struck me, was that there is less ’teen drama’ involved, the Locke’s seem to have matured — not counting Bode (Jackson Robert Scott), who is, as always, his playful self. Tyler (Connor Jessup) had already chosen to forget the magic in season two, which causes some annoyance among the family members, but this is not the same drama as between Kinsey (Emilia Jones), Scot (Petrice Jones) and Gabe.

As a big fan of the comics, I sometimes regret that the show doesn’t follow the story exactly, but on the other hand I’m very positive that the show didn’t, because now I don’t know what’s coming, I could be surprised and sometimes I am very pleasantly surprised.
New characters are added, such as the Wheeler sisters, which we already got to see in the trailer, but they lack depth. I would have liked to know more about those two, and how they got to where they were trapped. Maybe in the beginning there was still the plan to add another season, and they thought maybe to tie up later some loose ends. The same problem comes back here again with Ellie (Sherri Saum) and her return through the Omega door at the ending of the second season, we don’t get much explanation about this, and actually you are left with more questions than answers.
It is noticeable that fewer actors are participating and that the setting is almost mainly around the Keyhouse, probably there was less budget this season; But that’s no problem because we also get what we came for: Magic of the keys! New keys are introduced again, together with some old and it’s always fun to watch their magic. And in the end, it’s all about the Locke’s and the Keyhouse. This third season was exciting and interesting and how the last episode blends together is certainly well done. Probably because Joe and Carlton wrote the penultimate episode themselves.
Overall, it was a great season! I may not have always been on the edge of my seat, but I was always carried away with the story and wanted to see more and more. Finally, I would like to say that I am going to miss the Lockes anyway. Of course, the show will be on Netflix for a while and I’ll be putting them on regularly (for lack of better sometimes), but I’m going to miss seeing new things, new keys that could be found or made, and then the adventures around them!
Will we ever see the magic of the keys again? I’ll leave that to you to discover.
